Naturally, the losers were Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg. Users could not access Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/berniewong.net\/zh-hk\/social-stand-x-ming-pao-bernie-wong-speaks-on-what-marketers-need-to-know-about-instagram-fans\/\">Instagram<\/a>, and WhatsApp for six hours. <a href=\"https:\/\/social-stand.com\/facebook-reports-revenue-and-user-growth-in-q1-of-2021\/\">Advertising revenue<\/a> losses were incurred every minute and second until the outage lasted. Facebook\u2019s share price tumbled, and Zuckerberg lost USD 7 billion on the same day. There were losers, but winners as well. Snapchat users spent 23% more time on the app. <a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/\">Telegram<\/a> recorded 70 million new users, a record-breaking number of new registrations in a day. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/berniewong.net\/zh-hk\/\">\u6578\u78bc\u71df\u92b7<\/a> company, <a href=\"https:\/\/social-stand.com\/facebook-reports-revenue-and-user-growth-in-q1-of-2021\/\">Social Stand<\/a> jumped into action after discovering the outage late in the night. We became busy preparing action plans for our clients to help them know how to respond when they returned to the office the next day. Facebook reported that the global crash was due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/dns\/what-is-dns\/\">DNS<\/a> issues. DNS is the command that connects the domain and server. Theoretically, it takes about 24 hours to receive a DNS update on a global network. That is, even if things run smoothly, you would have to wait for 24 hours to confirm global online access. Armed with this knowledge, we informed our clients that even if they can access Facebook in Hong Kong on the same day, they should remain vigilant and delay publishing any advertisement or content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_a_Social_Media_Platform_Crashes\"><\/span><strong>When a Social Media Platform Crashes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outages on online services are nothing new. Users on their mobile phones that day probably thought it was a problem with their app or Wi-Fi. They only realized that it was an issue with Facebook\u2019s servers after accessing other websites or reading the news. We are a company that provides digital marketing, and we have a more systematic way of finding out the service status on <a href=\"https:\/\/berniewong.net\/zh-hk\/7-biggest-social-media-sites-in-2020\/\">social media platforms<\/a>. We would not be able to live without server inspection websites, such as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.com\/\">Down Detector<\/a>.\u201d It detects and reports outages of web services and affected sections. Besides, we also monitor users\u2019 discussions on Twitter. During the Facebook outage, the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/facebookdown?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag\">#FacebookDown<\/a> was trending on many tweets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_a_Backup_Plan_for_App_Login\"><\/span><strong>Have a Backup Plan for App Login<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone was unable to access Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp that day. Most, if not all, marketers have their marketing plans affected. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/\">NBC News<\/a> reported that even Facebook employees could not enter meeting rooms since these were linked via the Internet of Things (<a href=\"https:\/\/internetofthingsagenda.techtarget.com\/definition\/Internet-of-Things-IoT\">IoT<\/a>). It also made us ponder about many online services using Facebook to log in. If a <a href=\"https:\/\/social-stand.com\/facebook-login-connect-is-now-available-to-all-businesses\/\">login<\/a> page required a Facebook account, the user may not be able to access that particular service during the outage. Some businesses allow users to register and log in with third-party services like Facebook and Google. The experience from this incident should teach us that it would be better to allow users to add direct login methods after linking their accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Forming_Telegram_and_Discord_Communities\"><\/span><strong>Forming Telegram and Discord Communities<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook and Instagram are not all there is to marketing. Have users provide their email and contact numbers to facilitate a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/berniewong.net\/zh-hk\/bernie-wong-speaks-to-hku-mba-students-on-developing-omni-channel-marketing-campaigns\/\">omnichannel marketing<\/a> plan. Facebook and Instagram are convenient tools of social media that help easily reach one\u2019s audience. But remember that they are technically not owned media. Many content creators and media personalities in Hong Kong have used <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/\">Discord<\/a> and Telegram to establish their own communities.
