Marketing concepts become memorable when students can see how they work in real situations. On 21 September 2021, I returned to City University of Hong Kong as a Creative Media alumnus to deliver a guest lecture on 社交媒體營銷 for the Department of Media and Communication.
The session brought together academic ideas, practical client cases and the everyday digital moments that shape how people communicate. My goal was to make the concepts in marketing textbooks feel alive—and to help students examine social media as both a creative medium and a business environment.

ToggleTurning social media theory into practical decisions
Frameworks are useful, but their value appears when learners can use them to make choices. A social media practitioner must decide whose attention matters, what the audience needs, which story is credible and what action the content should support.
During the lecture, practical examples helped connect strategy with execution. The discussion centred on questions such as:
- How can a brand translate its positioning into a recognisable social voice?
- What makes a client case useful beyond its headline results?
- How do culture, timing and platform behaviour affect a message?
- When should a brand participate in a trend—and when should it stay out?
- How can marketers balance creativity with clear commercial objectives?
Why real cases matter in marketing education
Real cases reveal the trade-offs that tidy models may hide. Campaigns operate with deadlines, stakeholder expectations, limited resources and unpredictable audience responses. Discussing those realities gives students a better sense of the judgement required in professional marketing.
Everyday happenings are also valuable teaching material. A meme, a public conversation or a change in platform behaviour can become a prompt for analysing audience insight, brand relevance and ethical communication. The key is not simply to follow what is popular, but to understand why it matters and whether it fits the brand.
Connecting creative media and marketing
Returning to CityU was particularly meaningful because creative media shaped how I think about storytelling. Effective social media marketing sits at the intersection of creative expression, audience understanding and strategic intent. Content must earn attention, but it should also help people understand, remember or act.
This education-to-practice connection remains central to my work as a trainer and lecturer. Organisations and institutions can explore my corporate training programmes or AI and digital marketing training for current applications of storytelling, platforms and AI.
