Storytelling and Urban Art Tech at the HKBU Low-Altitude Economy Summit

Dr Bernie Wong speaking about storytelling and urban art technology at the HKBU Low-Altitude Economy Summit 2026

Technology can attract attention, but a meaningful story is what helps an audience remember and feel an experience. That was the central idea Dr Bernie Wong brought to HKBU’s 70th Anniversary flagship event, Intelligent Altitudes: The HKBU Low-Altitude Economy Summit 2026, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 27 February 2026.

Dr Wong joined the panel “Skylines as Stages: The Future of Mega Events and Urban Art Tech”, moderated by Professor Kingsley Ng and featuring Dr Marta Dowejko and Mr Samuel Lam.

The sky is a storyboard

Dr Wong shared a principle he also uses in corporate training and university teaching: do not treat technology as a billboard; treat it as a storyboard.

Drones, AI-assisted creative production and immersive digital media can all produce impressive spectacles. Yet technology alone does not create connection. The audience still needs a narrative that gives the experience structure, emotion and meaning.

From airspace innovation to narrative innovation

The low-altitude economy is often discussed through infrastructure, regulation and commercial applications. The panel expanded that conversation by considering creativity, city identity and human experience.

  • How can urban technology express the identity of a city?
  • What makes a large-scale event more than a visual spectacle?
  • How can AI support creativity without replacing human intention?
  • Are we designing moments people merely watch, or moments they genuinely feel?

For brands, public organisations and event leaders, the implication is practical: begin with the audience and the story, then decide how technology can strengthen the experience.
