Social Stand x Ming Pao: Bernie Wong Speaks on MeWe for Brand Marketing

On 11 December 2012, Bernie Wong, the owner and founder of Social Stand Limited, in collaboration with Ming Pao Finance, discussed the capacity of social platform MeWe for brand marketing. MeWe has been around since 2012, but it was not until the 2020 United States Presidential elections that the platform rose to prominence. President Donald Trump advocated for people to use it because he claimed that the coverage of the elections was being suppressed by most of the major social media platforms today. Many individuals in Hong Kong have also experienced the deletion of Facebook Pages and groups, which has caused great unrest across the country.

MeWe presents itself as an alternative to the major social media platforms because of three main features: no ads, no spyware, and no nonsense. Bernie Wong discussed the implications of MeWe’s features for brands and marketing companies in that while they are certainly attractive to the average user, it is an entirely different ball game for brands and marketing companies.

Bernie Wong further discussed how MeWe operates, and he dove deeper into the advantages and disadvantages of using the platform. He also alluded to the advantages Facebook has over MeWe and how audiences in Hong Kong would accept the platform.

Brands and marketers need to remember to maintain an open attitude and be flexible, and they need to understand how each different platform operates. By understanding the ecosystem of the different platforms, they could calibrate and maximize their marketing strategies to the exact specifications of the platforms. The most important thing to consider is whether or not the content brings value to the audience.
